Ok this is my first blog...after turning my Galaxy 5 into a brick 4 times...i finally succeeded in installing Froyo on it....could not find any posts online so decided to share this knowledge with everyone :) ....Its pretty simple....And one thing this is not officially available for the indian firmwares so remember this would void your warranty....after installation i'll be telling you how to root it (God mode for users!!!)...
You will be needing the following before you start the installation and rooting process
1. Your Galaxy 5
2. Ops file
3. Android 2.2 firmware
4. Odin Flasher (Windows....linux users please use wine and run it...preferrably ubuntu 9.10)
5. universal androot(for 1.6 - 2.2....after the installation is successful)
So now when you've downloaded all of it, you are ready to go..... :)
Installing Android 2.2 (Froyo) on your Galaxy 5
Step 1Take a backup of your phone contacts into your sdcard. Goto Contact ->menu->export to sdcard. This will create a *.vcf file.
Step 2
Extract the I5500LUYJP2.zip file and copy the extracted I5500LAROJP2.tar file to a preffered location.
Copy the EUROPA_v1.0.ops file to the same location.
Step 3
Now Poweroff your phone and remove the SD card and SIM from it and reboot in Recovery mode.
You can boot your phone in recovery mode by pressing the Volume down button + Center Button + End call button(power button) together.
Upon pressing the above combination you will see a black screen with a warning saying "Downloading" as shown in the image.

When you get this screen, connect your phone via USB to your system.
For windows users make sure you have Kies installed . (The driver to recognize your phone).
Linux users needn't worry...you are the best... :)
Once you get a Ready to use notification proceed to the next step.
Step 4
Open Odin Multi downloader.exe . Make sure that you check the One Package , Reboot and Protect OPS options. Your phone will be listed in the COM ports once the ready to use notification has popped up.

In the OPS option browse and select the downloaded EUROPA_v1.0.ops file and in the One Package option select the extracted I5500LAROJP2.tar file .
Once you've made sure that everything is according to the screenshot on the right click on start and wait till the phone reboots itself.
Step 4
After your phone reboots perform a factory reset by typing *#*#7780#*#* into your dialer pad.
Your phone is now installed with Android 2.2 (Froyo) !!! :)

Rooting your new Galaxy 5 ;)
Rooting is pretty much simple , just copy the downloaded UniversalAndroot.apk file to you SD card and run it from your phone then follow the screenshots below .

That's it!!! Now you have your Galaxy 5 with Android 2.2 and rooted !!!
All the best with your new phone ;) impress people with it :)
Please don't hesitate in sharing your queries....happy to help you.... :)

Hello there!
ReplyDeleteI'm very glad in finding this tutorial.
I want to update mine to froyo.
I'm currently downloading the files needed.
One thing though, you mentioned this "after turning my Galaxy 5 into a brick 4 times",
and this makes me feel hesitant.
Can you also show/tell how you unbrick your phone? Just in case peple mess up.(i hope i dont)
I'm sure a lot of people would love to know that.
Thanks so much!
Ok...i turned my phone into a brick because of my silly mistakes...thats the reason why i posted this blog because the 5th time i got it right...and you can try it as you can see the in the previous comments that users have been able to successfully upgrade their phones.
ReplyDelete@Franz - ok you willl have to manually set up your connection settings in access points list according to your service provider's requirements.
unbricking your phone is also a simple task...all you need is your phone's original firmware...i'll defenitely post that tutorial once i upload the original firware too.. :) and yes its normal to be scared before upgrading....trust me even i was really scared... :)
ReplyDeletehey this update was succesful but i cannot turn on packet data through my network provider. wifi works fine but i also cannot download apps from the marketplace. any help? And is there a way of reverting back to my original firmware. android 2.1 if needed? thanks
ReplyDeleterebooting should solve your problem of the android market....you will have to manually set up the access point for packet data...just google the settings...and you can always download the 2.1 firmware and go back to eclair...i'll post the tutorial to do that in a few days....
ReplyDeleteYeah, the upgrade is successful. but the mobile network option in the network settings cant be checked, its grayed out... even after entering the APN setting manually, it still doesnt change a thing. How to solve this?
ReplyDeletei faced the same problem too. But i was able to manually configure the APNs...it went fine for me...
ReplyDeletei configured them, but i still cant check the grayed out "use mobile packet data" option... how do you go online with GPRS?
ReplyDeletewell.i think you will have to perform a factory reset and try again. that should help. if not i'll find some way and post it here. The grayed out area did come in my phone too. Which is you service provider? if you can give me your service provider details i'll try to get aproper configuration.
ReplyDeleteMy service provider is Digi, in Malaysia... im guessing even if i put in the right configuration, it doesnt affect whether the option is grayed out or not
ReplyDeletethanks! nice post. i'm working up the courage to try this... :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the simple instructions on installing FROYO. where's the paypal donate button?
ReplyDeleteAndroot still doesn't work though. I get:
"Parse error there is a problem parsing the package." - I tried it twice, but no worries i'll find another way to root my GT-i5500 (Galaxy 5) on the web somewhere.
A huge thanks for Froyo!
:) nice to know that your flashing was successful...and thanks a lot for feeling that this is worth a donation :)
ReplyDeletethe rooting should have worked...try restoring the device to factory settings and reboot it. If it does not work please let me know....i'm about to perform the same on another device so will check it .
hi. I followed yours instruction (Samsung Europa Galaxy 2.1). Froyo installed successfully. Thanks for your blog.
ReplyDeleteHi guys i'm back with an easy way to install debian/ubuntu on your Galaxy 5 android...will be posting the blog very soon.
ReplyDeletebricked my phone trying to use kies update--used these instructions to upgrade and it worked amazing! Wish I could say the same about kies...
ReplyDeleteYou are awesome!! been looking for an easy tutorial and this was it, thank you so much now i have froyo!!! i agree with 514piano if you ever put a papal donation button, i'll do one, count on it.
ReplyDeleteThanx a lot Perez...I am overwhelmed with the support and appreciation i am getting from all of you....Recently was experimenting with installation of ubuntu on android....was successful in it but was not satisfied....wanted something new...so i'm now creating a custom gingerbread rom for galaxy 5...will be updating soon...and will need all your support :)
ReplyDeleteGreat tutorial mate!!
ReplyDeleteCan you tell me how to get a qwerty keyboard ??
I can't see a qwerty keyboard in settings :(

ReplyDeletea simplified and effective tutorial you can find on the net, thanks a lot.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Amit & Yash. Please post any issues you face. And will be soon coming out with Android 2.3 for Galaxy5 .
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this tutorial. It helped me upgrade my 2.1 Galaxy to 2.2 without a problem.
ReplyDeleteI will be checking your blog frequently for the custom 2.3 edition.
Thanks!
Hey guys help me on this... just upgraded my i5503 to froyo and now the fucking problem is when i tap the apn there no menu or single word that appears. It's only blank with a header of APN.. please help me on this
ReplyDeletedoes it works well on i5503 as well(India)?
ReplyDeletewhats the benefit to root the 2.2?
ReplyDelete@chintan-Yes it works on I5503 as well and benefits of rooting are a lot. Imagine you buying a computer for yourself and not having full access to it. Its something similar to that. Rooting gives you full access to your phone and allows you to tweak it according to your tastes.
ReplyDelete@andrew- Save your APN settings once made. Press the settings button to do so. If that doesn't solve let me know.
ReplyDeletehey man it works nice tut. After I updated to Froyo my phone is slow and my 3G? You know how to fix that ?
ReplyDeletethx.
ok...this the first issue i'm facing about 3G not working...try killing unnecessary tasks at startup to speed up your phone...as for 3G i'll find a fix.
ReplyDeleteHi, if I will upgrade my Galaxy 5 to froyo, will I be able to install apps to my sd card?
ReplyDelete@andromeda how do i that when there's no singele button or dropdown box
ReplyDeleteHi, I tried updating my sister's I5500 and it went very well. When I was about to update mine, I5503, froyo was installed but the error message, "sorry the process.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly" keeps on appearing, making me unable to key in *#*#7780#*#*. Therefore, I couldn't reset my factory settings. Help please.
ReplyDeleteI think it's okay now. I've tried removing the SIM card. Thanks for the wonderful tutorial. :)
ReplyDeleteWorked like a charm.Thanks a lot.
ReplyDeletebricked! !! help.....
ReplyDelete@Krutarth
ReplyDeleteIf its bricked, go to Samsung. No other way....
r u sure der is no oder way???
ReplyDeleteis my warrent voided due to dis???
help!!!!
I don't think there is any other way. Try to reboot into download mode and try flashing again. It might work. Else go to samsung.
ReplyDeleteI don't think there's a need of factory reset b'coz everything worked fine when i upgraded and didn't need to reset. all apps work fine.
ReplyDeleteNice tut it works. I am actually using the phone as my AP. I am going to write a dissertation about the technology behind the MIFI regarding the usage of a smartphone. any one who knows about it please reply thanks

All right, I need help. I followed all instructions to the letter (using WinXP with Kies 2.0) but at the Yellow Digger Droid screen (step 3) the screen stays that way for more than 1 hour. Some other sites are saying that it has to complete in 5 to 6 minutes. So I took out the cable and removed the battery and reinserted and phone was working again... with 2.1. This thing happened 4 times and then I stopped trying. How the hell do I get it to advance? What is the issue?
ReplyDeletehiii,
ReplyDeletei updated my Galaxy I5503 to 2.2 everythings working fine except that the battery backup has reduced tremenduously,it hardly gives a 12-14 hr backup plssss help.
This involves flashing right?is this tutorial safe to follow for noobs like me?
ReplyDeletesorry guys was away on a vacation.....this is safe enough....one out of ten phones have a chance of getting bricked or have some problems of restarting...be sure to remove the sim and sd card before flashing. Remaining is that there is a risk always involved.
ReplyDeleteis it ok even if i never flashed before?
ReplyDeleteYes...its perfectly fine :)
ReplyDeleteThanks andromeda. Your tutorial was perfect. The only thing this is, when I factory reset my phone it goes into recovery mode and when i choose reboot system it starts up okay but everything is in Spanish. I changed the language but what I do to make English default if i want to factory reset in the future? Thanks again.
ReplyDeletei did everything you said, the right steps, but when it started, it was going for 4min, now my phone is stuck on the SAMSUNG logo, what went wrong????
ReplyDeleteits frozen, took the batterie off and turned it back on, still frozen on the SAMSUNG logo
plz help
email; rajiabirached@hotmail.com
try to flash again...this time be sure to remove the sim and sdcard...also use the correct rom and ops file.
ReplyDeleteim trying to flash again, Opin is not detecting my phone, i did take my sd card and my sim, everything was good till the reboot, while rebooting it jammed on the SAMSUNG logo
ReplyDeleteWhat can i do?

ReplyDeleteNo that's not the case if you know your service provider's APN setting you can connect through packet data...Google you APN settings and set them in your network settings...It would defenitely work if you do it right.

ReplyDeleteI can you please address my battery problem.
After i upgraded to froyo, the battery started draining too quickly. after downgrading to eclair, it is again back to normal.

ReplyDeleteWell, I am trying to install the new firmware of Android 2.2 into my Samsung Galaxy GT I5500, but as I done the 3rd step, when I take off the SD card and PIN from it and reboot the phone in recovery mode and get a black screen with a warning saying "Downloading" as shown in the image of step 3, I connected my mobile via USB with my Laptop with windows 7 already running the software Kies (I am Linux user, but I got affraid to be this reason of the precedure not work, I prefer boot my Laptop with windows 7). As soon I connected it I got an icon rotating in the uper left corner of the page with the text "Connectin"... And it didn't chante longer... ReplyDeleteAny one know how to move on 2.3?
Hey guys, 2.2 for Asian Continent is release. Check on SamFirmware.com.
ReplyDeleteI have one question, what does rooting do? I installed it and some application named as superuser got install and when I click to start it, it close the application Forcefully closes it, when I click on logs. Can any one tell me about it?
@Chinmay: for downloading screen, press the button of volume in center i.e. whole volume control button and not up or down key. You should get Downloading screen.
ReplyDelete@Chinmay: It is not possible. When you extracted files from zip file you will get folder with same name that folder content .tar file. If you didn't get the file, download that zip again, extract it and find the .tar file in it.
thnx alot anup...........
ReplyDeleteis there any procedure to regain the previous 2.1????????
@anup- superuser is the application which gives permission to the software which works on your cell phone after rooting.. they permit that particular software to work i.e. it gives permission to software to work..
ReplyDeleteto fix this problem start that software, after doing, it will ask superuser permission to you, then check allow and do it permenently in the dailogue box beneath.. it will fix your problem
@anup- rooting gives you access to the system files of android. because of rooting you can change, modify, delete the system files a sp er you requirement. but by rooting you cell phone you will loose your warrenty......

ReplyDeleteThanks a lot man! Your great! My phone is now more powerful!
ReplyDeleteHi, I would really like to thank you for making this tutorial because I was about to return this phone because I had problems connecting to wifi with this phone however it has been determined by other users of these phones that it might be the software instead of the hardware that might be affecting this phone. I have to thank you because this has increased the function of my phone after having android 2.2 installed. I installed android 2.2, but I don't know how to install the root onto my phone. I put it onto my micro sd card however I could not figure out how to run the application afterwards. And could you please tell me what the purpose of having the root on this phone. Is it still safe to run the phone without it? -Thank you very much.
ReplyDelete@anonymous- root is not the software, its a method to gain the access to your system files by doing which you lose your phone's warrenty. you can use your cell with root or without root. if you are a technosavy, then you can go for rooting then your android monster will unleash its original power..................
ReplyDeletechinmay, could you tell how you solved the problem of force close when sim is inserted. I am having the same problem.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
My phone is bricked(samsung i5500), it just repeatedly flashes a blank screen. Any ideas ?
ReplyDeleteThanks! I did it!
ReplyDelete@people in centre - remove your sim card and keeping the memory card in the cell, perform the hard reset by inserting code which is mentioned above.... then you are done......
ReplyDeletecan anybody tell me how to solve the problem of bricking if it occcursssssssssssssss

ReplyDeleteI am not able to download the files you said we are required to...... I could only download the Odin thing....so what should I do?
ReplyDelete.. haha i upgrade mine to froyo using only d updated version of kies.. tnx.. samsung..
ReplyDeleteHi, I know that who use Linux are the best but why Odin under wine on Karmic (9.10 x64) can't find my GT-I5503???
ReplyDeleteBy now I'm tring to do the update under M$ but I can't understand why my fantastic Linux machine can't find the mobile. I'm INCAZZATO (very very very angry in Italian)...
But if M$ needs kies to find the mobile, why wine wouldn't need the same for kies???
I'll try to install kies under wine to upgrade my mobile under Linux.
I am confused. I have a Samsung Galaxy Europa GT-I5500. Is this also known as Galaxy 5?
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for the Froyo flashing tutorial. Great job.

ReplyDeleteu r great, u saved my day, thanks alot!

ReplyDeletemy battery drains rapidly after upgrade to 2.2 ... and it won't charge to 100%, the cellphone is very new recently unpacked
ReplyDeleteused dd cmd to get the stl5.rfs to get perso.txt for the unlock code, [didn't dd it back to phone and after rebooting phone it was [soft?]bricked.
ReplyDeleteI tried 1click unbrick and numerous Odin methods but none worked. I can still get the phone into download mode [Samsung GT-I5500]. Has anyone any help they can offer please. I think by doing the dd to an o/p file perhaps a read bit set and phone doesn't like that? I had successfully updated software using Kies but it wasn't the Froyo, just a later 2.1.
Any ideas welcome. I'll try [almost]anything now. Thanks.
it seems easy to follow the tutorial.
ReplyDeletebut statistically speaking according to andromeda, the ratio is 1:10, which means that even though you perform and follow it perfectly, there is still that 1 percent possibility of bricking your, this might be due to some other factors like, your computer is not linux or that its low in terms of computer memory, there are many problems and things to consider, that is why before performing the the task, you have to ask yourselves "am i ready to take the risk?"
good luck everyone!!!
Working Great dude.....thanks
ReplyDeleteDone it successfully... Thanks for the great help. Also now Froyo allows me to move apps from phone to SD .... superlike

poor sad little people that think the Galaxy 5 is getting multi-touch.
ReplyDeleteNewsflash, the screen does not, and *can* not, support this.
It physically does not have the hardware, its not a matter of a software update.
@sonycam when your phone is showing samsung recovery choose clear data/factory reset then choose clear partition (forgot the exact words). After reboot, voila you have froyo running on your phone. I have flashed my phone as many times as you are before found out the method. Flashed firmware I5500XFJPQ. HTH.
ReplyDelete@sonycam..same problem...but i cannot choose clear data or factory reset.because it direct to logo screen..,..help plss..

ReplyDeleteK, so I live in New Zealand and have a samsung i5503. I tried to install froyo twice and bricked the phone twice. I managed to find an older version of the firmware that worked and had my phone back. The problem was that the wireless no longer worked and my phone would randomly turn off. I installed a third firmware on it to find that I couldn't download apps for it. Then finally I tried installing froyo again. IT WORKS!!!!! Thank you so much for you tutorial.
